Bonds,
in my life,
have never been
permanent.
More like
strands of hair
bound with cheap
dollar-store hairspray;
the link disintegrates
and I’m left
floating loose again.
My heart is loyal,
but bonds must go
two ways.
Some bonds
I’ve seen
shattered by death.
Even those
vowed to outlast time
blew away from me
at a breath.
So forgive me
if I care quickly.
Forgive me if
I trust slowly.
Learn that I do not
give up easily.
Time is precious,
especially to me,
but I will gladly give
all my time.
I will learn patience.
I will earn trust.
I do not lie.
I do not betray.
I do err, but I learn.
And before my days
are spent.
I will learn friendship.
I pray I will know
true bonds
before I am unfettered
from life.
